9th March is the 90th birthday of Yuri Gagarin, the legendary soviet cosmonaut. On 12th April 1961 Yuri Gagarin became the first person in world history to travel into space. This flight proved it possible to live and work outside the Earth atmosphere.
The launch vehicle Vostok carrying Vostok 1 spacecraft with Gagarin on board was launched from Baikonur Cosmodrome located on the territory of the Kazakh Soviet Socialist Republic. The flight lasted 108 minutes and ended in a successful landing. During the flight the spacecraft completed a full orbit of the Earth. The date of Gagarin's space flight has been celebrated as Cosmonautics Day. In the world this day is known as the International Day of Human Space Flight proclaimed by the United Nations General Assembly.
Everyone interested is welcome to attend an exhibition devoted to Yuri Gagarin and displayed at the circulation desk of Natural Sciences (room 254, 48 Kuybysheva St). The exposition includes books written by Gagarin himself, memories of the first cosmonaut’s mother and colleagues along with monographs and articles produced by researchers in the sphere of space and space flight. The exhibition will be on show till 15th April.
