Lesson 8. Electronic Resources: Terms

An electronic resource consists of an aggregate of digital documents building thus a database, electronic learning resource or electronic library system. Let us identify their likeness and differences.

A database (DB) is a regularly updated aggregate of digitized information arranged in accordance with conceptual structure that describes characteristics and correlation of this information.

It should be noted, that DB can be a subject to copyright as a compound product, i.e. an aggregate of systematized independent articles, regulations, judgments, and so on. In this case, selection and placement of these materials is a result of a compiler’s creative activity [4, cl. 1259, 1260].

DB can also be a subject to related rights, since to create a DB requires financial, material, organization and other expenses. Volume of content should be no less than 10 thousand independent data items [4, cl. 1334].

Understanding of the essence of a database legal status and the ratio of creator’s and user’s rights will eventually allow legal using of DB content.
Electronic learning resource is a specially created resource posted on a portal of an educational institution or on some other website. It must be digitalized, structured, include subject content and metadata [1, 2].

Digital library is an information system designed to organize, store and use an ordered stock of digital objects supplied with navigation and search tools. The content is compiled by an electronic library’s operator in accordance with its purposes [1-3].

Digital elements collection is actually a part of electronic library content. A collection is built upon some criterion to solve some tasks determined by electronic library policy [1-3].

THUS, all the enumerated electronic resources are information systems providing storage, navigation, search and online use of their content. These resources have such characteristic features as individual goals, legal basis for their creation and use, and resource content.
