Lesson 23. Russian Books Databases

According to GOST Р 7.0.17-2014 a book is defined as “non-periodical text printed publication issued once in the form of a block of bound sheets of printed material in a cover or binding of at least 48 pages” [1, п. 5.2.2.2]. The following kinds of non-periodicals can be distinguished: monograph, textbook, reference book, encyclopedia, dictionary, popular non-fiction, etc.

Searching books, first and foremost you should focus on the library electronic catalogues. A separate search bar is used for each attribute, for example author’s name, title, topic, etc. Many libraries purchase commercial discovery-services (for example, EBSCO Discovery, БиблиоПоиск (BiblioSearch, etc.) or use free software using a single search bar.

Printed books in UrFU Library stock can be found via Library Electronic Catalogue, and CONSENSUS OMNIUM: Corporate Network of the Ural Libraries.

Apart from this, books can be found in digital libraries and Electronic Library Systems (ELS).

1. UrFU faculty and students have access to digital publications:

— Though subscribed Electronic Library Systems “University Library ONLINE”, “Lan”, “Bibliokomplektator” (IPRBooks). Content of each ELS differs. It should be noted that search results can return non-subscribed items not available in a full text. Working in an electronic library system gives an opportunity to read a book online and offline. All electronic library systems have mobile apps. A user can print or download up to 10% of a book or cite pages, which facilitates working with a text. Books from three enumerated Electronic Library Systems are reflected in the Library Catalogue.

Remote access to each of the Electronic Library Systems requires logging in within the University network. For the period of distance learning you can use the following ways to access ELS if you have no personal profile:
