* * * The Tsarskoye Selo Lyceum, later the Imperial Alexander Lyceum, had a bright impact on the history of Russian education. Closeness and elitism of the Lyceum, the proximity to the Imperial Court and the Russian state administration posed special tasks for the Lyceum teachers to educate outstanding individuals. And the major part of the Lyceum graduates did become such during more than a century of its existence. The story of the Lyceum education began with a lot of preparatory work, and many prominent figures of Russia took part in it due to their public service that set such tasks for them. Emperor Alexander I, Minister of National Education A. K. Razumovsky, Director of the Department of Education I. I. Martynov, prominent statesman M. M. Speransky, and others took part in the creating and discussing the curricula of the future educational institution. The candidacy of each professor and teacher was carefully selected and discussed at different levels. Being highly educated and having strict scientific and pedagogical demands to the mentors of the future Russia’s elite, the first Lyceum Directors I. F. Malinovsky and E. A. Engelhardt personally selected the future mentors The first Lyceum professors managed to set that high level of knowledge and development, that “lyceum spirit” the subsequent generations of Lyceum mentors strove for. * * * The exhibition creators would like to fully introduce the works of the Professors of the first, Tsarskoye Selo period of the Lyceum. However, the second Alexander period is also associated with the activities of outstanding scientists - historians, philologists, lawyers. Therefore, the exhibition provides insight to the Professors’ works performed throughout the whole existence of the Lyceum. | |
