Kaydanov Ivan Kuzmich (1782-1843). Honorary Professor of History at the Tsarskoye Selo Lyceum (1811-1841). Corresponding member of the Imperial Academy of Sciences since 1826, author of textbooks on Russian and world history. Studied at the Kiev Theological Academy, Saint Petersburg Pedagogical Institute. He attended lectures on history and philosophy at the University of Göttingen in Germany.

At the Lyceum I. K. Kaidanov gave lectures on national and world history, geography and statistics. In 1835-1838, in addition to teaching at the Lyceum, I. K. Kaidanov lectured on history at the Imperial School of Law, was a member of the Academic Council of the School.


In 1813 I. K. Kaydanov began publishing history textbooks, which were used not only by lyceum students like A.S. Pushkin, or M. E. Saltykov-Shchedrin, but also by several generations of Russian gymnasium students. "Basics of World Political History", "Synchronic Tables for the Study of Chronology", "A Brief Outline of Russian History for Children" were adopted as teaching aids in grammar schools, colleges and some universities, and were reissued many times. While “A Brief Outline of World History” has been reissued 16 times! I. K. Kaydanov's works have been translated into French, German, Polish and Romanian.

He was a strict and demanding teacher: "... Dealing politely with decent pupils, he mercilessly scolded the bad ones". Pushkin and his comrades as the first graduates had kept good memories of their history teacher.
