Engelhardt Yegor Antonovich (1775-1862). Educator, scientist, publicist. Director of the Tsarskoye Selo Lyceum from 1816 to 1823. Educated in a private boarding school, was fluent in six languages. He was in service in the military department and in the Collegium of Foreign Affairs. In 1801-1811 he was Assistant Secretary of State in the Council of State; attended the opening of the Tsarskoye Selo Lyceum in 1811.

In 1812 he was appointed Director of the Pedagogical Institute.

The time when E. A. Engelhardt was Director is considered the “golden age of the Lyceum”. E. A. Engelhardt was a supporter of the system of education and teaching that had developed under V. F. Malinovsky, and he defended it with conviction. He considered the moral upbringing and education of lyceum students to be the main task.


Many students left their memories of E. A. Engelhardt filled with sincere gratitude to their mentor.

E. A. Engelhardt paid much attention to the replenishment of the library. He acquired a large number of books for the Lyceum library: over the years of his directing, the number of books increased up to 7000 items. After his dismissal in 1823, he kept in touch with former pupils, even with the disgraced V. K. Küchelbecker and I. I. Pushchin. He was a regular participant, and since the 40s - organizer of the annual meetings on October 19. E. A. Engelhardt was actively involved in literary and translating activities. In the years 1834-1852 he was editorial director of the “Zemledelcheskaya gazeta” (“Agricultural newspaper”). He also was a member of many scientific societies, including the Free Economic Society and Russian Geographical Society.

E. A. Engelhardt reorganized the economic administration of the Lyceum, improved the position of the tutors, and established a Lutheran church in Tsarskoye Selo.
