Second Language Acquisition by Rod Ellis
In today 's world of technology, a huge number of people have been able to travel around the world and communicate with people of different nationalities. Distance has been significantly reduced through the use of electronic communications. Humanity is no longer disconnected from each other. It forms a large multicultural community in which communication is the first priority. In such an era, the question of learning foreign languages becomes topical. Second language learning, designed to explain the subtleties of language learning as well as to develop strategies to facilitate this process, comes to help.
Systematic study of the process of learning the second language is a rather new phenomenon. This fact provokes young scientists and beginning teachers’ particular interest. In the first chapters the author introduces the reader to the goals and objectives of science, tells about the main problems and ways of research. The main method is the case method, which is a thorough and in-depth study of a particular situation. Scientists study the experience of different people and on this basis form the theoretical base of science. No wonder that Ellis himself often uses cases as examples to his explanations, turning the description of the theory into some semblance of a story, the main characters of which attempt to learn new languages.
