Malinovsky Vasily Fedorovich (1765-1814). The first Director of the Tsarskoye Selo Lyceum. Russian educator, teacher, publicist. Graduated from the Philosophy Faculty of Moscow University. He served in the Collegium of Foreign Affairs, spoke several foreign languages: Greek, Latin, Turkish, etc. In 1789 he was sent to London as part of a diplomatic mission, with the rank of Titular Councillor. Two years later he was transferred to the field army in Turkey, in 1800-1802 was Consul-General of Russia in Moldova.

In 1811, State Councillor V. F. Malinovsky was appointed Director of the Tsarskoye Selo Lyceum. He was actively involved in the organization of the Lyceum, selected teachers, took care of the first pupils.


He was one of the founders of those pedagogical principles that formed the high "lyceum spirit", love of freedom, nobility, and the true culture of pupils. In the opinion of the old-timers of the Lyceum, it was the first course that "was recognized as the ideal of public education".

A brilliantly educated man, Malinovsky translated several books of the Bible, published the periodical “Autumn Evenings”. In his writings, he developed the idea of universal peace as an indispensable condition for the existence of mankind. In his essay “On Peace and War”, he proposed one of the first projects for the abolition of serfdom.

Having become Director of the Lyceum, V. F. Malinovsky continued to be a member of the Collegium of Foreign Affairs. He was the director of the House of Industriousness which supported lower-class girls. He also participated in the creation of the Bible Society.
