Grot Yakov Karlovich (1812-1893). Philologist, historian. Academician, Vice President of the Imperial Academy of Sciences. He graduated from the Tsarskoye Selo Lyceum in 1832 with gold medal. His scientific interests were formed during the years of study at the Lyceum. In 1837 he published a translation of Byron's poem “Mazepa” in “Sovremennik” ("The Contemporary") magazine; his articles on the history and literature of Scandinavian countries were also published there. Since 1840 he was Professor of the Department of Russian Language at the Helsingfors University. He had published a number of books and articles in Swedish on Russian history and language, at the same time he introduced the Russian readers to the history and literature of Finland. In 1846-1847 under his supervision a Swedish-Russian dictionary was published. In 1873 his major work "Philological Research: Materials for the Dictionary, Grammar and History of the Russian Language" was published.
From 1852 to 1862 Ya. K. Grot was employed as Professor of the Department of Literature at the Alexander Lyceum.
Since the 1860s Grot was engaged into a detailed study of the activity of a number of Russian writers: M. V. Lomonosov, N. M. Karamzin, I. I. Dmitriyev, and others. Since 1864, a nine-volume collection of works by G. R. Derzhavin, prepared by Grot was being published. The publication contained a complete biography of Derzhavin, comments on the text, versions and drafts of poems, information about illustrations and reissues. This edition of G. R. Derzhavin works to this day remains a model for compiling academic and complete collected works.
In 1885 Ya. K. Grot "Russian Spelling" was published (was reissued 9 times). Since 1891 the Academy of Sciences was publishing “The Dictionary of the Russian Language” edited by Grot.
The archive of Yakov Karlovich comprised a huge amount of materials on the history of the Lyceum, especially of the Pushkin period. Some of these papers were donated by his son, K. Ya. Grot, to the Pushkin Lyceum Society.
