Kulman Nikolai Karlovich (1871-1940). Literary historian, philologist. Graduated from the Saint Petersburg University. He was Professor at the Imperial Alexander Lyceum, the Women's Pedagogical Institute, the Higher Bestuzhev Courses and military pedagogical courses. He taught also at schools for workers.

N. K. Kulman is the author of a number of valuable works on the history of literature and social movement of the first half of the 19th century, such as “V. A. Zhukovsky Manuscripts Kept in the Bobrinsky Counts’ Library”; "Pushkin's Treatment of Romanticism"; "Prince P. A. Vyazemsky as Critic" and others. N. K. Kulman is the author of works on the theory of Russian grammar: "Historical and Theoretical Basics of Modern Grammar Methodology"; "Methodology of the Russian Language"; "Elementary Practical Grammar". These works remain their scientific significance to this day and are constantly mentioned in studies of linguistics.

In 1919 N. K. Kulman emigrated. He was Professor of Russian literature at the Belgrade and Sofia Universities, and since 1928 he lived in Paris. There he became firstly Professor, and then Dean of the Russian department of the historical and philological faculty of the Sorbonne, taught at the Franco-Russian Institute. He was tutor of King Alexander of Serbia.

In emigration, N. K. Kulman continued his scientific research. He collaborated with the “Russkaya Mysl” (“Russian Thought”) magazine. N. K. Kulman was one of the organizers of commemorative activities dedicated to the centenary of A. S. Pushkin death. He was a member of the Central Pushkin Committee in Paris and editor of the one-day “Pushkin” newspaper (Paris, 1937). In the same year, his book "Pushkin the Mason" was published in Paris.
