Lesson 18. Russian Periodicals Databases

It has been generally acknowledged that articles highlight the latest scientific information. Therefore, it is of vital importance be aware of the key journals in your research topic as well as of the resources accumulating them.

Let us have a brief tour over the basic Russian databases of periodicals containing not only the articles but full online versions of the journals.

1. To start thematic search for articles would be better with bibliographic, abstract and full-text databases.
MARS ARBICON (Interregional analytical card of journals) – is an abstract database of journal articles containing 2,5 mln+ articles from 2300+ Russian journals from 2001 up to this day. The base does not contain full texts. It is ccessed from UrFU corporate network. Full text of an article can be ordered via Interlibrary Loan service. It provides only printed copy of an article.

VINITI online (All-Russian Institute for Scientific and Technical Information) - contains bibliographic data, keywords, headings and abstracts of origins in the Russian language in natural sciences, exact sciences and engineering. Timespan from 1981, monthly updated, is made up of 28 thematical fragments.

UrFU Journal Portal - is information portal containing data on 19 journals published in UrFU with the possibility to look through contents lists and full texts of journals issues.

eLIBRARY – Russian scientific electronic library. Contains abstracts and full texts of 29 mln+ scholarly articles and publications, including online versions of 5,6 thousand+ scientific and technical journals, 4,8 thousand+ of them being open-access.

East View – the resource is headquartered in USA, but has Russian-language content. UrFU is subscribed to interdisciplinary e-collection of journals (190 items+), full texts of articles being available.

CyberLeninka – Russian electronic library working according to the model of open science. It contains 2,1 thousand+ full-text journals.

Google Scholar – freely accessible web search engine for scholarly and educational information. Results may contain hyperlinks to full texts of publications.

Dimensions — a free platform providing access to 86 mln+ articles and books, 34 mln patents, around 500 thousand clinical trials, descriptions of 3,6 mln+ grants financing fundamental and applied science all over the world. Content is connected by 3 mlrd 800 mln links and is contextualized by a number of metrics and alternative metrics.

Elpub – a platform of peer-reviewed journals providing access under the license of Creative Commons. Its content is 130+ Gold Open Access journals.

2. Additionally, you can use open-access journals in electronic-library systems “Lan” and “University Library ONLINE”, in National electronic Library, etc.

3. There are also journals only available in print form. They should be searched for in the Library catalogues.

The printed journals stock of UrFU Library is represented on UrFU Library Electronic Catalogue of Periodicals and The List of Periodicals in UrFU Library Stock.

The printed stock of Ekaterinburg libraries is represented in Integrated Catalogue of the Periodicals in Ekaterinburg Libraries (website of Sverdlovsk Region Interdisciplinary Scientific Library named after V. G. Belinsky).
